Thomas Jacob “Jack” Black grew up in Santa Monica, California with both of his parent being satellite engineers. His parents fought a lot and ultimately divorced when he was 10 years old. Young Jack turned to acting as a source of attention and landed his first commercial at age 13.
He stated, “I knew that if my friends saw me on TV, it would be the answer to all of my prayers.” He attended UCLA and became a member of the Tim Robbin’s Actors Gang, based in Los Angeles, California. The team’s motto was dare to be stupid. This helped influence his signature style of acting.
His adult career began with prime time television. Later, Black took small movie roles and soon gained leading roles such as Nacho Libre, Shallow Hal, and Tenacious D. He also provided his voice for the lead role in Kung Fu Panda and Kung Fu Panda 2. Black earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for his starring role in School of Rock. His second Golden Globe nomination, also for Best Actor, for his role in Bernie. Known for being manic, Black is quirky but always unforgettable.
